What the person needed:

Art needed to verify that Native Americans in northeastern Nebraska stole a wagon load of payroll gold from the United States Army in 1867.

How I satisfied that need:

The story that Art told me about Native Americans stealing a caisson-load of gold coins from the United States Army was intriguing. My instincts told me that the story had likely been fabricated. The story he told contained pieces of historical fact, but overall did not mirror what really happened on the ground in 1867.

Later, an interview with a local newspaper editor confirmed, that four decades earlier, the editor wove together multiple events from 1867 to create the fictional story out of whole cloth. The local newspaper published this story and the town adopted it as historical fact. I informed Art of my findings.
